A Virgin Discovers Long-Distance Cycling

London Edinburgh London is the British answer to Paris Brest Paris. It was first organised by Audax UK in 1989 on a small scale. There were 29 starters and 26 of them finished. And it started in Doncaster so it should have been called Doncaster Edinburgh London Doncaster, but that's by the by. This early venture was clearly deemed a success because the event was repeated for years later in 1993 and every four years thereafter, and each year it was bigger than the last. In 2009 there were more than 400 finishers.

The graph shows that the growth in the event is roughly exponential, doubling roughly every five years. At this rate, there will be over a million riders by 2065, and before the turn of the century, the numbers will exceed the entire population of the United Kingdom, presumably with a very large number of foreign riders.

As soon as I heard of the event, I knew I was going to do it.
